Happy Birthday Marco!

We were invited to a birthday party today. Another first for us.

But we must first fill the car with diesel after a week of traveling. There's a convenient station on the way out of town. After lots of gesturing and Italian speaking to English hearers, we manage to get the tank filled. $140 for 15.6 gallons = $8.80 per gallon. Oh!

We had spent the morning writing words of American wisdom on cards for Marco.

It's a little difficult expaining the meaning to an Italian, "Never squat with your spurs on."

We didn't have to explain, "Smile while you still have teeth."

Four courses today.  Marco is married to a Greek.  He told me how bad it is in Greece - they put all the food on the table at once and then they talk a lot and all the food gets cold!  Hmm, what will he think when he visits us in America?

We started out with Greek phyllo shells, made by Cristina herself, filled with small shrimp, three cheeses and some good, Italian bread.  Actually, the word 'good' is synonomous with Italian when describing bread so just a superfluous word.

On to paella with many fruits of the sea, inlcuding baby squid about an inch long.  Yes, you can still see the suction cups on an inch long squid.

And then prawns.  BIG prawns!  On a huge platter.  Fresh, of course.

One of the cards read, "Birthdays are nature's way of telling you to eat more cake."  We weren't disappointed with that course either.  Their fondant doesn't taste like cardboard; I'm guessing it's actually made with marzipan since almonds are a cash crop here.

Lots of layers of goodness!

I often say that I have lots of friends that I haven't met yet. I'm so glad that I got to meet these!

One more bit of American wisdom... Men are like wine. Some turn to vinegar but the best ones get better with age.  No cruet for Marco!
